What's STEP?

STEP Stands for Smartly Tailored Employability Program, a program which has an objective to enhance the employability skills of the students. Employability skills are those attributes of a student which not only help them to be employable but also helps them to sustain the employment. These skills are different from technical competence, that make them an asset to the employer. Such skills include presentation, communication, interpersonal skills, workplace manners and others.

Every person in the world is different and every person has a right to be employed. However, not everyone gets employment according to his/her skills because of which most end up in wrong careers. Although there is a career for everyone, finding the right one suiting the candidate is often ignored. STEP not only helps you find the right career, but also helps you to get prepared for the Job Market and Identify the first right job for yourself.

Getting a right first job is not easy as you thought

We are TMI First, India's leading third party fresher hiring agency and a part of TMI group, India's largest recruitment house with operations since 1989. According to a survey entitled “Achieving Necessary Skills” conducted by TMI First, more than 50% graduates pass out without basic knowledge required to find and hold onto a good job.

And why are employers dissatisfied? TMI First observes that the non-technical abilities play the spoilsport, employability skills to be precise. Other than a degree for qualification, many candidates are not equipped adequately to convince the corporate world. They seem to lack basic communication skills, an essential in a global setup while a majority lack technical knowledge, English proficiency, critical thinking and other skills as well.

The Employability Quotient - Startling!

MBA
With 1,400 colleges churning out 1,00,000 MBAs every year, existing business talent supply infrastructure in India sounds healthy. But, a majority of the talent output is not job ready. Case in point, a mere 23% of MBAs passing out every year are employable. While India Inc. requires close to 1,28,000 business graduates annually, the job ready MBA talent is as low as 17%!

B.E/B.Tech/MCA
India boasts of close to 1,350 engineering colleges. And as of 2008, the technical graduate and post graduate output (comprising Bachelors, Diploma, MCA and Masters in Engineering) is over 4,54,000. With all of it, existing engineering talent supply infrastructure sounds healthy. But, a majority of the talent output is not job ready. According to a study by NASSCOM, a mere 25% of Engineers passing out every year are employable. For instance, consider the IT industry. It requires 3.5 lakh engineers a year. And the available job-ready talent is just 1.5 lakh! Less than 50% of its requirements.

B.A/B.Sc/B.Com & Others
Experts at Human Capital, the consulting arm of Mercer Consulting reveals that a mere 25% of graduates passing out every year are employable. Skills World 2008, a Confederation of Indian Industry-Aspire report reveals that 39.5% graduates are employable. So, the challenge ahead is to bridge the gap by providing skills training to the rest 60 - 75% graduate population
